window repair crank replacement

People are of the notion that a window is useless if the crank stops working as they do not have any knowledge about the replacement procedure for crank operators. But, follow this guide to learn more about it. You need not replace the entire window and just need to replace the faulty part, which can be done within an hour. Read on to know more about replacement of window crank operators.

Check if a Replacement Window Crank or Hinge is Necessary

First of all, check if the window can be opened and shut without any problems. If you are able to do it, there most likely is no fault with the window crank operator and hence, it is recommended that you consider other options before you replace the crank operator.

Replacing the Window Crank Mechanism

When you turn the window crank handle, if the handle spins or slips (sounds like clicking), it is likely that there is a problem with gears inside the window crank hence, the window crank must be replaced. However, finding the crank would be a difficult task as you would have to look for the exact type before you wish to replace it.

After you have the new mechanism for the casement window crank operator, check if it resembles the one that is in use. This would ensure that the window operator replacement process is easy. To replace the crank operator, make sure that it fulfills any of the below-mentioned conditions:

  1. Gears missing or worn out
  2. The window handle is clicking when it's turned unable to open or close properly
  3. Damaged or bent window crank arm(s)
  4. Splines broken or missing in the crank stud

Removal of old parts

Before you install a new one, you would have to remove the old one. This can be done yourself by finding the instructions online or by calling in a window repair service. If DIY then start with removing the bug screen and then open the window.

The casing of covers must be removed initially by removing screws and using a knife to pry off any wood or covering if this is obstructing the screws. This process is easy if done with much care and attention.

Installation of New Window Parts

After removing the crank operator from the casement window, shut the window for a while until you find the right part, this prevents the wind from swinging the window wide open possibly crashing it into the side of your home. Only after comparing both the existing and new part, go ahead and install the new crank operator.

This process is easy as you would be able to find several DIY guides and tutorials online that would assist you. Also, make sure that you put back all the screws so that the installation is perfect. On the whole, this process can be completed within an hour.
